 The moon.

It takes 27.3 days for the moon to circle the earth, but due to the fact that the earth and the moon are spinning together at different speeds around the sun, it means it actually takes the moon 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 28 seconds, to complete one orbit of the earth and this makes the period from new moon to new moon. The sun orbits the earth once every 365 and a bit days.  The way the orbits of the earth and the moon go make the difference with the amount of sunlight reflected off the moon, this is what gives us the changing shape from our perspective.  This is the illuminated part that we can see, we only ever see one

side of her, this part reflects the Goddess and it is what we use in our magic.  The faces of the moon from a witchy point of view are, the new moon this is when the moon is new in the sky, and we can only see a sliver, the horns of the moon point to the left.  The new moon period lasts three days.  This is always a good time for the start of new projects, fresh starts a new beginnings.  The new moon is the start of the waxing phase.

The waxing moon is considered by some to start on the third day after the new moon, my personal perspective on this, as I was taught is that the new moon is the start of the waxing phase.  This waxing phase runs through to the full moon and it is the time for growth and the magic that involves increase and drawing good things towards us.
